itihaasakGurudwaras.com, A Journey through Sikh History

Gurdwara Shri Bagh Shaheedan Sahib, Chandigarh This sacred site is located in Sector 44 of the modern city of Chandigarh. It is the martyrdom site of Baba Sukha Singh Ji and his fellow warriors. Baba Sukha Singh Ji was the younger brother of Baba Baaz Singh Ji, who was appointed as the Governor of Sirhind by Baba Banda Singh Bahadur. Near this place, in the village of Barael, lived Mughal rulers named Jaula Khan, Rustam Khan, and Shamsh Khan. These rulers had created immense tyranny in the region. Along with looting Hindu property, they also dishonored women. Whenever a wedding procession passed through Barael, these rulers would forcibly seize the bride’s palanquin, take it to their fort in Barael, and disgrace Hindu women for several days before letting them go. The lives of the common people had become unbearable. Despite multiple pleas and requests from the villagers, the Mughal rulers refused to change their ways. Helpless, the people approached Baba Sukha Singh Ji and narrated their suffering. Moved by their distress, Baba Ji accepted their request and tried to reason with Jaula Khan and his men, explaining that all women should be treated as sisters and daughters. However, intoxicated with power, these rulers ignored his words. Baba Sukha Singh Ji then devised a strategy to expel them from the fort and decided to confront them according to Khalsa traditions. The Khalsa sent a message to the Mughal rulers, deceiving them into believing that a wedding procession of Rajput women carrying immense wealth was arriving from Ropar. Greedy for riches, Jaula Khan and his allies hid in this garden, waiting to ambush the procession. However, when the Mughals attacked, they were shocked and humiliated to find that the palanquins were loaded with stones instead of brides. Meanwhile, the Singhs had already taken control of the Mughal fort. A fierce battle ensued. Baba Sukha Singh Ji first sent a contingent led by Baba Harkirat Singh Ji, who fought valiantly and attained martyrdom while eliminating many Mughals. Then, Baba Sukha Singh Ji himself entered the battlefield with his warriors, annihilating the tyrants before achieving martyrdom. The enemy was completely destroyed, and the Khalsa emerged victorious.
